Pacific Metrics’ CEO Howard C. Mitzel to Present at U.S. Department of Education Race to the Top Assessment Meeting
MONTEREY, CALIF., June 10, 2011— Howard C. Mitzel, Ph.D., President and CEO of Pacific Metrics Corporation, will be presenting as an expert panelist on the topic of automated scoring at the U.S. Department of Education Race to the Top (RTTP) Assessment Public Meeting on Friday, June 10 in Chicago, IL. According to the U.S. Department of Education, this meeting will “bring together representatives from the two RTTA consortia and a panel of experts to discuss automated scoring of assessment…The purpose of the meeting is for PARCC, SBAC and the Department to better understand the reliable and valid use of automated scoring of various formats and types of items. The information shared at this meeting will help inform the use of automated scoring in the new assessment systems that will be administered for the first time in school year 2014-15.”
With over 30 years of experience in the assessment field, Mitzel is widely known for his innovative work in large-scale assessments. Mitzel is co-founder of Pacific Metrics Corporation, and the co-developer, with Dan Lewis, Ph.D., of the Bookmark standard-setting procedure, known today as the most widely-used procedure in large-scale assessments for setting defensible standards in K-12 programs. A respected member of the assessment industry, Mitzel sits on numerous technical advisory committees and has presented at industry-oriented conferences including the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME), and the American Educational Research Association (AERA). Mitzel holds a Ph.D. in Research Methodology and Quantitative Psychology from the University of Chicago and a Masters in Technology and Public Policy from Washington University.
